The Transfigurator
The score for a piece I made a few years ago is finally available in a readable version. It’s not really a full-blown composition, but rather some sort of interactive musical installation. We did the piece a few times with different groups, and it’s safe to say it always provides a fun but very brainy challenge for the players. It has also proven a great thing to do at schools, letting the kids take care of the music-making themselves. The piece was originally written as a part of the piece Chaos, written for PODIUMfestival Esslingen, but exists now purely on it’s own.
In this piece the audience or any non- player makes music by manipulating coloured wooden blocks. The blocks make up a musical notation system read in realtime by one or more musicians simultaneously. The blocks can be manipulated by either a chosen “composer” (or composers), or preferably, directly by the audience. It is recommended to have at least two (preferably more) musicians present, reading each their own individual set of blocks simultaneously.
